"You're joking, right?"

I wish I were fucking joking. I wish I had never gotten into that godforsaken hot tub, but I did. Avery and I are in the corporate box at the arena. The Northmen are playing the Chicago Whirlwinds, and the game is tied three-three heading into the third. I've been filling Avery in about my hysterical Huntsville getaway with Luke during breaks and intermission.

Luke and I got back late last night. I didn't have time to catch up with my BFF. Now, she's having the time of her life, laughing at the comedy of errors that is my life.

Avery thinks having my mother crashing Thanksgiving as Uncle Eddie's new girlfriend is the most hilarious thing to happen. Ever. Or she did until I detailed the coup-de-grace event—the hot tub escapade, in which I got outed as Luke's lady lover. Oh, and having his mother proceed to tell me "irresistible men" run in the Valentine family. She insisted I shouldn't feel embarrassed because she and Mr. Valentine are notorious for finding themselves in compromising positions. I think Lily wanted to pour bleach in her ears at that point.

"Next time, I'm coming.” Avery laughs, taking a sip of her Diet Coke. "My Thanksgiving wasn't nearly as entertaining as yours."

Avery was lucky enough to have an uneventful meal with her mother, step-father, Oliver, and Oscar. I love Avery's blended family. I've always thought Avery is lucky to have siblings, especially two step-brothers as cool as Ozzy and Ollie. As a kid, I wanted a brother or sister to play with and have squabbles with about stupid things.

Before the third period starts, I shoot out a quick tweet and post on Instagram. The teams are back on the ice, readying themselves for battle and to gain two points in the standings with a win.

"Did you promo the contest on all our socials for game tickets and the charity match?" I ask Avery. She nods.

"Yes. I spoke to Tonya Sallenger from Women and Children's Shelter. She's all in for the charity match. I can't wait to see you play again and knock some of these boys on their asses."

I smile at Avery as the puck drops and Toronto takes control. I'm looking forward to the fundraiser too. It's been a while since I've played competitively, but I'm excited to lace up and get back on the ice. Avery's right—I'm almost giddy with the idea of kicking ass. Even though I don't have loads of extra time to hit the rink, I still workout on the ice when I can.

"Did you book the extra room for us for the road trip too?"

"Aye, Aye, Captain.” She salutes. "I'm psyched that we're tagging along to Florida. Toronto is already too cold, and I could use some sunshine."

I don't bother reminding Avery this is a business trip. She has her heart set on laying by a pool until it's absolutely necessary she get off her ass and do some work.

I focus my attention back on the game, my eyes immediately focusing on Luke.
